Magniflex Relaxsan in the UK a short History Relaxsan Mattresses are made in Prato, Tuscany, Italy by Allexanderx spa. They have numerous brands; Relaxsan, Magniflex, Waterlattex and they have licences to use or have had other brand names such as Pierre Cardin and Lamborghini. Relaxsan mattresses have been sold in the UK for approximately 12 years now. For the first 10 years or so they were imported by General Traders limited of London, but unfortunately due to the credit crunch and the pounds slip in value against the Euro they went out of business early in 2010 this was a great shame as they are lovely people and great to deal with. As soon as it became clear that General Traders were no longer going to be able to continue, we contacted Allexanderx in Italy and started bringing in the mattresses directly. It was quite a shock to find that such a huge firm is actually a family firm with strong family and ethical values. The firm is run by Marco as the CEO with his two brothers working in the firm but more in the background. Marco`s father who founded the firm and invented the vacuum packing process was still calling into the office in 2010 even though he must be in his 80`s. Though we miss dealing with General Traders, dealing directly with the factory has brought numerous advantages of which, more later. The first mattress available in the UK was the Relaxsan which was an Ultra firm mattress and was possibly the very first vacuum roll packed mattress available in the UK. About a year after this mattress was made available the UK brought in new fire regulations for all mattresses and to comply the Relaxsan was made marginally less firm, i.e. it was about 12 on scale of 1 to 10 and I would say it is now about 11, it really is a very very firm mattress. So if you have a Relaxsan Mattress which is 10 or 12 years old with a Blue label it is one of the early Relaxsans and the one we still sell to this day and we call the Relaxsan Original and is probably one of the firmest mattresses on the UK market today, but due to the clever use of materials is comfortable and supportive but not just to everyone’s taste. The next mattresses available were the Orthosoft and the Waterlattex. The Orthosoft has a Burgundy label and is a little softer than the Relaxsan Original but is certainly not a soft mattress. When you sit on the edge of the mattress you may think it is quite soft, but as you lie down and spread your weight the mattress starts to feel much firmer and very very supportive, in fact this mattress has for many years been recommended as a suitable choice by Salisbury spinal injuries clinic for their recovering patients. The Orthosoft is an extremely popular due to the fact that it is at a very affordable price for such a great mattress and that it is a slightly more middle of the road mattress in terms of feel, not too hard nor too soft, on a scale of 1 to 10 I would give it a 7/8 when lying down. The next mattress is the Waterlattex about which more later.
