Bed bases. How important is your bed base to your mattress. For some reason people seem to neglect the quality of the support their new mattress is going to get. The foundation that the mattress goes on is crucially important and basically there are 3 types of base, but obviously it is more complicated than that, but lets keep things simple, it is nearly Christmas. The three types of Bed Base can roughly be described a;
  • Platform Top. This is a Divan Base with no springs, it may or may not have legs or drawers but you can tell what it is by lifting your mattress and pushing the base about 30 cm`s in from the edge, if it feels solid with no spring it is a Platform top. Platform Top bases manufactured in the UK usually are topped with some type of board that is breathable then upholstered with fabric. It is usually a good idea with bases of this type to let your mattress breath once a month on it`s side because even though the base is breathable it can still trap a little moisture. If you are buying a new mattress for an old base and want to check the base is in good condition, simply remove the existing mattress and if base is flat with no dips and is clean it will be fine. This type of base will make your mattress feel firmer.
  • Sprung Base. Surprise Surprise, this is a Divan Base with springs, it can either be sprung edge to edge, in which case it usually called a Sprung Edge, or the Springs can be set in the Frame and the Edge of the base feels hard and it would be called a Firm Edge. Confusingly some manufacturers now make Sprung edge bases which have a firm Edge, sounds dodgy to me but thats what they do. You can tell if you have a sprung base by lifting the mattress and pushing the mattress about 30 cm`s in from the edge and if it feels sprung it is a sprung base. If you are buying a new mattress and your base is over 6 or 7 years old I would reccomend replacing the base as well, because they do tend to lose their support and you just cannot tell by looking at them. Also if you put a new mattress on a substandard sprung base it can cause the mattress to sag through poor support. The main reason for a Sprung Base is it makes a mattress feel softer which many but not all people feel is more comfortable.
  • Slatted Base. Slatted bases are usually found on Bedstead type bases such as Pine or Metal Beds though they can be found on Divan beds. Slats are usually either flat planks which make your mattress firmer or they can be curved and usually laminated which give slats a little bit of spring and makes the mattress feel slightly less firm. Slatted bases are excellent and give good ventilation. If you are putting a new mattress on an older slatted base and you have solid slats and they are in good condition there should be no problem, if on the other hand you have sprung slats these can deteriorate over time and should be replaced if possible or a new base purchased. Sometimes beds with solid slats have the slats spaced a little far apart, but this need not be a major problem as you can literally just by a plank off wood to fit and re-space the slats. Some beds have metal tubes as slats and in my experience these are terrible and to be avoided.
If you want a  great quality slatted base but do not fancy a bedstead that takes up extra room you could try one of these http://www.dreamtyme.co.uk/acatalog/Storra_Bed_European_Style_bed_base.html

Silver Lining Pillow

Just taken delivery another batch of the superb Silver Lining Pillow which has an every increasing group of fans. If you have never used or seen a Silver Lining Pillow the concept is quite simple but very clever. In the end of the Pillow is a slot which closes up with press studs and into this you can insert an aircushion which you can blow up to suit yourself, most people find that they take a little experimenting with at first but once people have decided how much air they want in them, they love them and would have nothing else.
A mistake some people make when first inflating the Airbag is blowing it up too much like a balloon when infact it just needs very little air in so the weight of your head pressurises it an gives great support.
We also supply replacement airbags as the airbags are a consumable and can get damaged if people sit or stand on the Pillow. The Airbags also fit Dream Wizard pillows which are not currently available.
